Adaptive Intelligent Facades and Responsive dynamic surfaces
The facades occupy an unique, interesting and a very complex position as the face of architectural approach and the response to the image architecture portrays through the built form.
Facades have moved beyond the basic purpose of envelopes providing shelter from the elements of nature in the primitive ages to now being able integrate intelligent, environmental, material, visual, structural and interactive functions.
These facades influence how people view architecture and the city and the image the city and its architecture projects.
The design of the facade differs with lot of parameters like: Responsiveness to climate, visual importance, materiality – durability and geometry and as a structural component.
All these parameters are like the structure and texture of an interwoven fabric and put together lead to the evolution of the built form that we see and experience.
Facades are sometimes designed in response to the context they are placed in or the location where they are to be designed, requiring them to be aware of the character and nature of the built form surrounding it (in places of historical importance and heritage value, polluted industrial areas, along noisy highways, etc).
The material/materials used to design a facade have their own properties: advantages, limitations and compatibility which too guide and influence the overall design process.
Ongoing research and innovations in material science, methods and tools for designing and fabrication keep changing the ways facades are thought of.
The area of the facades and surfaces of the built structures put together is immense and beyond imagination and calculation. A lot of thought needs to be given to this while designing the same and has the potential to make us aware and change the way we approach this aspect of architecture.
Motive:
I wish to study the process of evolution, methodology and the role of the building envelope, facades and surfaces that have moved from being mere basic shelters to being more meaningful and intelligent.
I am hopeful of exploring and formulating my own response to these aspects of architectural facades.
Methodology:
Study of :
1 Climatology
2 Integration of various know principles and technologies along with newer technologies or in different ways to create better facades and systems for the building envelope.
3 Previous works of architects and their responses to facades.
4 Materials used and which can be used and their properties.
5 Systems that can be explored and referencing the study to scientific principles, phenomenon, objects (e.g: Skin:Human, snake, fish scales,Tree leaf,Orange skin, Doodle-pro,etc)
6 Design a composite/layered facade system which will be work as a single entitiy responsive to various parameters.
7 Aesthetical aspects of the facade and integration of mechanical, automation, digital systems that might be required to make a system work in the best possible
manner.
